A Sample Wedding Day Timeline
Having a clear wedding day timeline example is incredibly helpful when planning your own schedule. It gives you a starting point you can follow exactly, customize to fit your day, or use as inspiration to build your own wedding timeline from scratch.
A well-structured and realistic wedding day schedule is one of the biggest factors in having a smooth, stress-free wedding. On the other hand, weddings without a solid timeline often run into delays and avoidable stress.
This example timeline is based on a 6:00 PM ceremony wedding day with a first look, designed to help you understand how the day can flow from start to finish.

Bridal Details 2:00 - 2:30
Every bride loves wedding detail photos, and your wedding prep is an important part of your overall story. From rings and invitations to flowers, jewelry, shoes, and the wedding dress, these wedding flat lay and detail shots help capture all the meaningful elements that make your day unique.
Bride and Groom Getting Ready 2:30 - 3:15
After capturing all the wedding detail photos, I typically move on to the groom getting ready location, followed by the bride’s getting ready suite. This is also a great time to have a second wedding photographer, so both spaces can be documented at the same time—ensuring no moments are missed during the wedding morning.
First Look 4:00
This is one of the most meaningful moments of the wedding day. I’ll find a private, out-of-the-way location and plan it ahead of time during the getting ready photos, so there’s no stress about where or when it will happen.
Bridal Portraits 4:15 - 4:45
Once the bride and groom have had their first moment together on the wedding day, it’s the perfect time to transition into portraits. Doing couple portraits after the first look is ideal because emotions are fresh, excitement is high, and that real connection comes through naturally in every image.
Bridal Party Portraits 4:50 - 5:20
Now it’s time for bridalparty photos! Having someone assigned to help gather everyone and get them to the right location on time will make this part of the day run much smoother. Also, making sure all boutonnieres are on before portraits start will save a lot of time and keep things flowing efficiently.
Hide the Bride 5:30 - 6:00
Part of the wedding day is surprising your guests when you come down the aisle! Make sure you add some time to get tucked away and, just so you know, guests tend to come a little early so plan for that too!
Reception and Ceremony Details 5:30 - 5:50
I love to get into the ceremony and reception spaces before all the guests do so that I can get some shots when it is all set up exactly as the Bride wants it to be!
Ceremony 6:00 - 6:30
It is time to get married! The lighting at this time will be very romantic. Most ceremonies are 30 minutes or less but if yours is longer then make adjustments for that!
Family Portraits 6:40 - 7:10
These portraits usually happen right after the ceremony because it is the time when all your family are in the same place! I definitely recommend doing them outside if you can to give them a more natural feel and because some reception spaces can be little dark.
Some “Just Married” Portraits 7:15 - 7:30
Right after the family portraits at around 7pm is the best time of day in the late spring, summer and early fall time of year! The sun is gorgeous, glowy and golden!
The Reception 7:30
This usually starts with your Grand Entrance and then the party begins! Get ready for some fun because they are always a blast!
The Exit 10:00
In this wedding timeline, I include 8 hours of coverage to capture key reception moments and about an hour of dancing. If you want wedding exit photos, you can add extra coverage or plan a fun faux exit earlier in the night with your bridal party—this works really well and keeps the party going.
I hope this example wedding timeline helps you as you plan your big day! If you have questions about adjusting it to fit your wedding day schedule, feel free to reach out. I love helping couples build a timeline that feels smooth, realistic, and stress-free.
